The sources of U.S. energy production by percentage of the total for the nation are as follows:
- natural gas: 31.8%
- petroleum: 28.0%
- coal: 17.8%
- renewable energy: 12.7%
- nuclear electric power: 9.6%
In 2017 the U.S. was nearly self-sufficient in the production of energy. About 89.6% of the energy used in the U.S. was generated in the U.S. The balance was mainly in the form of imports of crude oil.
