U.S. Coal Consumption by Major End Users 1950-2017

By far the dominant user for coal in the U.S. has been the electric power industry. In 2017 the electric power industry used 664.7 million short tons (MMst) of coal, which was 92.7% of the total coal consumption by consuming sectors. The second user category was other industrial users at 51.2 MMst or 7.1% of coal consumption.
