US Energy Use by Source and Sector in 2017

In 2017 almost all primary energy consumption was by the following sectors:

  • Electric power generation - 38.1%
  • Transportation - 28.8%
  • Industry - 22.4%
  • Residential - 6.2%
  • Commercial - 4.5%


The energy used to produce electricity was then reused in the form of electricity to provide energy for the other four sectors.

The above diagram shows the distribution of energy sources used in the U.S. in 2017. Non-renewable sources (fission and nuclear) account for 89% of total usage. The sum of all renewable sources account for the balance of 11%.

As shown in the above image, three industry types use over half the energy used by all of U.S. industry. Those three industry types are:

  • bulk chemical - 28%
  • refining - 18%
  • mining - 11%

The greatest use of energy in transportation is by cars and light trucks, followed by large trucks and aircraft.
