The amount of natural gas used in the U.S. in 2016, expressed in units of a trillion cubic feet (Tcf) is as follows:

  • Electric power—9.987 Tcf
  • Industrial—9.31 Tcf
  • Residential—4.35 Tcf
  • Commercial—3.11 Tcf
  • Transportation—0.74 Tcf


The Electric Power sector uses natural gas to generate electricity. The Industrial sector uses natural gas for heat and power and for the production of chemicals, fertilizer and hydrogen. Residences use natural gas for heating, cooking and miscellaneous other purposes. Commercial enterprises use NG for heating, cooking, outdoor lighting and more. Transportation entities use NG to compress and move other NG through pipelines. A very few organizations (e.g. government) use compressed NG to power vehicles.
